when you think of Australia, you don't automatically
associate it with wine. Yet, there is some beautiful wine
country in Australia with spectacular scenery and delicious
wine. You can enjoy a leisurely trip through the five
distinct regions in South Australia which have beautiful
wine country.
Adelaide Hills. This area is close to Adelaide, one of
Australia's major cities. You can enjoy the comforts and
pace of the country, but be just a step away from the city,
with all of its attractions. There are attractions enough
in Adelaide Hills, however. There are plenty of vineyards
to tour and wine to taste, and, as it is close to the state
of Victoria, you can even see some beautiful Victorian
countryside.
Barossa. One of Australia's best wine producing regions,
this valley is an absolute treat. Known throughout the world
as a premier wine producer, Barossa's beauty and wine
producing capabilities have attracted many European
influences. Many of Barossa's villages resemble those found
in Germany or England in terms of their architecture, tone
and tradition. You can relax and enjoy an afternoon sipping
local wine along with European specialties.
Clare Valley. Australia's famous 27 kilometers long Reisling
Trail is located in the Clare Valley. This trail makes for a
very fine bike ride. You can stop at the 40 cellars that lie
on the route to sample the local fare. You can also choose
to stop over at the hostels and restaurants dotted along the
way, thereby completing the trail as slowly or as quickly as
you like.
Fleurieu Peninsula. This peninsula stretches from just
south of Adelaide done to Cape Jarvis. Part of the
peninsula includes the McLaren Vale, a wine-producing
district accented by beautiful scenery. As the name
implies, the peninsula has French influences, including the
propensity for fine wines. There are close to 60 cellars
in the McLaren Vale, they proprietors always enjoy treating
guests and encouraging tastings.
Limestone Coast. Named for the limestone that forms this
part of the Australian coast, the region's wine is made
better by the rich limestone foundation. Limestone decays
the soil and it in turn breaks down into nutrients.
Additionally, the decaying process creates natural
aeration, and that is perfect for growing vineyards. In
addition to some of the world's most acclaimed wines,
Limestone Coast also features a system of underground caves
so unique that it is listed as a World Heritage Site.
When enjoying any or all of Australia's wine country, you
can travel by car, bike, or even hot air balloon. Hot air
balloon is a great way to get a bird's eye view of the
countryside, and many cellars will allow you to make
arrangements to land in their vineyards to be greeted by a
glass of wine.
Bike rides are also an enjoyable way to traverse through
wine country. You can not only find great bike trails in
Clare Valley, but wherever you go in the wine country.
Australia's wine country is sure to provide you with not
just style but substance.
