Make mine a cruise...

The numbers of people deciding to take a cruising holiday
have escalated out of all recognition in the last ten
years. As people become more adventurous they want to try
the holidays that were once purely for the rich and famous.
If you want to indulge yourself, you need to plan ahead and
make sure that you book the right type of cruise.
Firstly you need to decide who you want to take with you!
Is it going to be a romantic holiday for two or do you want
to open an invitation out to your adult friends and/or
include your and their children? If you do decide to take
children you'll find that a lot of ships have fantastic
schemes to amuse children of all ages all day every day
leaving you free to indulge yourself in whatever way your
heart desires!
Budget carefully and, in conjunction with this, you have
to decide what type of cabin you want (or need). It's
tempting to go for the cheapest in the ship because you
feel you won't be there much, but these are absolutely
tiny. They're also right inside the bottom of the ship, so
there's no real light and you'll feel every wave in the
middle of a night if you hit a rough passage. If you're at
all claustrophobic it would be worth cutting back on
something else to get an outside cabin with a bit more
space. It will also be more tempting if you like to get
away from everyone else for a few minutes of peace and
quiet each day.
Keep in mind the time of year that you want to take your
holiday and compare it with what you're looking for from
the experience. Alaska and the northern Baltic are very
popular destinations at the moment but it's just too cold
in winter. Sometimes even the Mediterranean is pretty grey
and dull compared with the summer. Most people who cruise
are looking for the sunshine and the best places to find it
are around the Caribbean and Mexico. Here there are many
highly professional companies who have every problem sorted
before it happens.
To really get the most out of the trips on land and the
cruise as a whole, you really need to be quite fit. The
ship often has to anchor some way from the ports and they
then ferry the passengers on smaller craft. Just getting on
and off these can be a challenge if you're not very mobile.
You may choose a cruise which has a particular theme and
there are a lot of celebrities who will give talks and
demonstrations on a wide range of subjects. Some of these
cruises stay mostly on the sea and have few stops. Their
aim is to entertain you every moment that you're awake and
satisfy your every whim so that you don't want to go
ashore. It's rather like Disneyland on the water!
You also need to decide how formal you want to be in the
dining hall. Some ships still have a Captain's dinner,
whilst others recognise that more people prefer to be
informal. If you are required to dress it will mean packing
long dresses or dinner suits all of which are very bulky
and heavy. You will also be put on tables with others and
if this doesn't appeal to you, you'll need to book a
special table beforehand.
