How passionate are you about skiing and do have great people
skills? Are you okay with being immersed in skiing 24/7 and
strive for a job in this field that would bring in a steady
paycheck? A career in the ski resort industry then might be
the ticket you're looking for. At the same time, you can
learn management skills that are tailored for this industry.
While some higher institutions focus more on ski resort
management, others ready a student for a career in various
related entertainment careers such as spas and hotels,
cruise ships, and resorts. Most of these programs enable a
student to develop management skills to handle food
services, staffing, event planning, and marketing services.

The goal of these resort management programs is to prepare
students to handle not only day-to-day management
activities that may be common to all businesses but also to
become proficient in marketing, the laws and regulations
that pertain to the hospitality industry, and knowledge of
how to establish good customer relations.

Most resort management programs take four years to earn a
bachelor's degree. The college courses covered include
common business courses in topics such as psychology, world
geography, public speaking, computer applications, business
math & accounting, economics, leadership, and marketing.
The specific resort management courses mostly cover
purchasing & inventory control, consumer behavior,
housekeeping, sanitation, security & safety, beverage & food
management, and real estate development & management.

Some specialized hospitality management programs are
designed for a degree in ski resort management. Most of
these programs are obtained through a designated ski resort
or sponsored by a famous ski resort area such as Steamboat
Springs. These customized programs mix hands-on experience
at the ski resort with classroom work to cover the general
business subjects. You can qualify for different
accomplishes after some parts of the training, such as a
technician's certificate on equipment maintenance on ski
lifts after one year, an associate's degree after two years,
or a bachelor's degree after completing the four year
program.

Ski Area Management is another degree that many skiing fans
pursue. This program does not exactly cover the same
material as a resort management degree. Instead, ski area
management concentrates more on outdoor equipment and
designing a ski area. Many hands-on courses cover ski area
design & management, ski lift installation & maintenance,
and ski safety techniques. The only type of degree program
like this in the western U.S. is Colorado Mountain College,
which has been around for 30 years. Another U.S. location
in Vermont also offers one semester of courses in ski area
management.

The only programs for ski area management are offered at the
U of Vermont and Colorado Mountain College; however, many
schools throughout the U.S. offer ski resort management
programs. The best way to find these programs is to look
identify popular areas for snow skiing. To boost their
local economy, many state colleges support these applied
educational programs.
