Red State of Colorado

Colorado is the mid west state of the United States. The
state, surrounded by seven other states, has some of the
worlds most beautiful and scenic places. The state is
replete with mountains, lakes and forests with considerable
wild life population. It has extreme climatic conditions
with cold winters and hot summers. The heavy snowfall
during winters attracts lots of adventure tourists who come
for winter sports like skiing and snow boarding. The
beautiful city of aspen is their most liked destination.
Summer season offers tourists adventures like hiking,
camping, rafting and mountaineering.

However those who live in Colorado have to deal day to day
with the with the often cruel climate. It is a place of
contrasts - a place of beauty and fantasy but often cruel
reality. In the winter especially, the daily shovelling of
snow from your driveway and treacherous conditions on the
roads can be a real chore. Not surprisingly people often
retire south to the milder climates found in Georgia or
Florida.

However, those who live in Colorado are proud of their state
and try hard to keep it from being spoiled. In 1976 for
example, Colorado refused to hold the winter Olympics there
because of the likely effects on their state such as
contamination, fears of a population boom and of course the
cost involved.

Colorado means 'colored red' and indeed the land and many of
the rock formations are a rich terra cotta color. It has a
rich history and mixture of cultural influences - from the
original native Americans to the Anglo-Europeans who settled
in the north of the state to the Hispanic Europeans who
settled in southern Colorado. Indeed many of the place
names are Spanish - Pueblo, San Luis and the name of the
state itself Colorado, which means to blush in Spanish.

Colorado was a real frontier state. In the early part of
its history it attracted all sorts of prospectors for gold,
especially in 1800s. There are lots of gold and silver
mining towns that you can visit as well as ghost towns of
settlers from this period. These have a real Wild West
atmosphere and you can really imagine what it must have been
like to live in these small towns - especially with the help
from all the western films we've all seen and that help fill
in the details!

There are calm places as well in Colorado. The Rocky
mountain range runs towards the west of the state, the
cattle country in the north-west and the capital city of
Denver is in the urban belt of the east of Colorado. The
city has a population of 500,000 and a metro population of
2.1 million. Though a relatively new city, it is known for
its restaurants and museums. The Colfax Avenue is the
longest street in America and the inventor of the
cheeseburger in 1935, Louis Bellast used to live here.

Colorado offers something to all types of visitors. It
offers everything from urban sophistry to the ruggedness of
the Wild West. Its vast stretch of land and clear skies
brings out the creativity of an individual.
